Jacques De Munck, composer and
multi-instrumentalist, was born in a family of professional musicians.
He spent years in Africa where
he gained experience with ethnic instruments and types of music.
After he returned to Belgium
he became a professional musician and went into world music. ThatÕs
how he learnt to play various instruments such as : the
bouzouki, the dzourá, the
baglama (Greek instruments), the
lute, the African ballophone,
kora and kalimba,
the Caribbean steeldrums and
even the Indian sitar.
He does a lot of research into
the origin and use of instruments with different peoples and studies
various types of music with an open mind.
He sings in different languages
(Greek, African languages, English, Spanish, Creole, French, Italian
and Dutch).
He inspires and leads the bands
BELGRECO, MATADI
and ARTO MUNDO. He composes
a lot and has already released 6 CDs with Greek music. In the beginning
of this year the album ÓMourmourika,
rebetica ke LaikaÓ was released with personal Greek compositions
in which the evolution of Greek music can be found. This CD was given
a warm welcome by the Greek population.
With MATADI he released 2 CDs
with predominantly personal African compositions and with ARTO MUNDO
a live CD with world music.
He participated as a songwriter
in the prestigious USA Songwriting Competition
(32,000 entries!) in 2004 and became 3rd finalist in the category
Worldmusic with a Greek song ÓMavra,
griza ke tholaÓ.
In 2005 he was the WINNER of
the United Kingdom Songwriting Contest
with the song ÓYo Marina BananaÓ.
In the USA songwriting Competition
2005 were he at the 20 honourable indications with the number Yo
Marina Banana.
There were no less than 33700 entries!
In his repertoire he mainly plays
personal compositions giving him a very typical own sound which he
owes his success to.
Being a perfectionist he does
his own recordings in his own recording studio.
